Colorado Springs, CO

Care and Share Food Bank's new headquarters in Colorado Springs. The new facility has receive a LEED Silver Certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The building opened January 2009 for food distribution to 435 food banks and pantries in southern Colorado. The building includes a 50,000 square foot warehouse that towers 50 feet high, along with a 9,000-square-foot cooler and freezer unit, a 5,000 square foot office wing, and a commercial food kitchen. In addition to incorporating low-flow water controls, recycled materials and skylights in the warehouse, designed to reduce the need for interior lighting, the building is designed to make it easier for food to arrive, be sorted and packed, and given to agencies in a covered loading area. After two years of fund raising, our project team was able to bring the project in $60,000 under the original conceptual design estimate and finished the project a full month ahead of the original schedule.
